1984 and more

How patriotism in me accepts views of an English novelist George Orwell in his book ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four’?

Being a Native Indian by birth, I am an Indian born many a time with reality of the Nation.

Every author writes his learnings, life/lives, etc. in books. Books exist as readers receive. The book ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four’ by George Orwell was published in the summer of 1949 and reached me in July 2016. This book is recognised as one of the definitive texts of modern literature.

Much understood, History is not a subject of choice for many who all chases to belong to the intellectual strata of their social belief.

The back cover of the book states the following: –

‘Set in Oceania, one of the three inter-continental superstates that divided the world among themselves after a global war. Orwell’s masterful critique of the political structures of the time, works itself out through the story of Winston Smith, a man caught in the webs of a dystopian future, and his clandestine love affair with Julia, a young woman he meets during the course of his work for the government.

As much as it is an entertaining read, Nineteen Eighty-Four is also a brilliant, and more importantly, a timeless satirical attack on the social and political structures of the world.’

The context is too thoughtful to finish reading the book at one sitting.

The author of the book George Orwell being an Eric Arthur Blair by birth with origins of homeland in Bihar, Orissa known to move to London later with her mother. A learned man raising doubts to anyone like me who has never crossed the borders of mother India having their passport stamped is in later half of twenty-nineth year of life.

This is not about who belonged to where and travelled to where. This is more about less concerns if history repeats itself.

While the author George Orwell could throw some light to world history in the year of 1984 and around, a recovery of a personal diary note at a corner in India reads two dates of passing away of two Prime Ministers of India viz. Late Smt. Indira Gandhi followed by Late Sri Rajiv Gandhi few year down the line back to back.

The tenure when the then Indian ministry and the bereaved family of the martyrs could heal and gather to take care of the country and countrymen was not a while. In the meantime, youth and aspirants who required to earn livelihood had to compromise with their unemployment. This is not any regret to any specific colour of political banners for no other local parties or the great Communist Party of India could help employment of job aspirants. Women done with their limited education after high school or college were married off despite continuity as job aspirants but job or any source of income was mirage. Work was maximum appreciated but not get paid. Men had to adopt different means. Paintings(including art like Alpona), knitting, cooking, arts, etc. were accounted as signs of a suitable bride/married woman rather considering efforts to showcase work aspirations. Majority of women were considered to be the doormats of civilization. Married women having children were mostly called as child’s name’s mother e.g. Sona-r Maa instead of addressing them with their own name. Victims will not deny this.  Such was the state of women empowerment. A percentage of widows were empowered to raise their children. Any women surviving that age of traumatical condition in the country working or in a position of authority are women of substance to modern age.

By now, the country India has evolved as a developing Nation that has progressed a lot. Increasingly educated India has elected their Prime Minister of India Sri Narendra Modi who is known to had been a tea seller once. With lots of efforts to enhance the condition of the country India, India has focussed a lot on men and women empowerment that reflects in the employment status of the countrymen and more. Trust of majority of the countrymen is put towards the present Government. The present Government could form Government without political allies. India is developing in trade and commerce as well and International ties. The trade relations between India and USA is specially mentionable looking at the two top notch political figures of both the Nations meet several times sharing camaraderie even publicly. The Indian press had been keen to share how the Prime Minister of India Sri. Narendra Modi had welcomed the US president Mr. Barrack Obama warmly serving tea on his own. India is aware of the fruitful outcomes of it’s international ties. The way to progress must not be weird as it continues.

All of the neighbouring countries of India are progressing as well like India with huge influx of money and development in industries, trade and commerce, as well as more into socio-economic aspects.

A critic insight would tell another tale of emerging of an era where history is going to repeat itself as in 1984 and around with diminishing women empowerment. Possibly, time when women just be baby carriers only rather than baby carriers being an object used to carry a baby along.
